Transfăgărășan vandalism: Retired official fined for spray-painting rock
A 55-year-old retired employee of the Ministry of National Defence from Bucharest has been identified as the individual who vandalized a protected rock formation on the Transfăgărășan road. The man used spray paint to draw a large heart and the name ‘Anna’ on the rock.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred in a protected natural area. The individual faces significant fines, estimated at approximately 6,000 lei (roughly 1,500 lei per letter), and will be legally required to clean the paint from the rock formation. The case has been referred to the Argeș Environmental Guard.
Public interest in the case grew as details emerged regarding the identity of ‘Anna.’ Reports suggest she is a Ukrainian citizen who sought refuge in Bucharest in 2022 and is involved in a relationship with the man, who is himself married. The incident was captured on video by mountain rescue personnel, sparking widespread public indignation.
