Transfiguration of the Lord celebrated in Romania on Aug 6 2026

Romanian Orthodox Christians will observe the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord on 6 August 2026, one of the twelve great feasts of the church. The day is marked by a red cross in the liturgical calendar and is traditionally called Probojenia.

Customs associated with the feast include refraining from household chores, avoiding arguments, and not traveling. Women are advised not to wash or comb their hair, and washing clothes is discouraged to prevent lice. Sweet foods are forbidden, while fish is permitted despite the day falling within the Dormition Fast of the Mother of God.

The celebration recalls the biblical event on Mount Tabor where Jesus revealed his divine glory to the apostles Peter, James and John, accompanied by the prophets Moses and Elijah.
