Transfiguration of Christ Marked on Aug 6 in Romania, Greece and Beyond

Orthodox churches and monasteries across Romania, Greece, Bulgaria and other regions observed the Transfiguration of Christ on 6 August 2026. Liturgical celebrations included special Divine Liturgies, processions, and the blessing of the first grapes of the harvest, a tradition linked to the feast. In Romania, the Slatina Monastery hosted a hierarchic service led by Bishop Macarie, while the Putna Monastery and other local churches held similar rites. Greek monasteries such as the Monastery of the Great Savior on Syme and the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration on Lesbos conducted elaborate services with Metropolitan Chrysostomos presiding. The day also coincided with the Miner’s Day in the Valea Jiului region, where commemorations for miners who died in the 1929 Lupeni strike were held alongside religious observances. Across the Balkans, the feast was marked by pilgrimages, folk customs, and the distribution of blessed wine and fruit, underscoring its cultural and spiritual significance in the Orthodox world.
