Transfiguration of the Lord celebrated in Greek and Romanian churches

On 5‑6 August 2026 Orthodox and Catholic communities marked the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord with special liturgies, processions and prayers. In Greece, major services were held at the cathedral in Cefalù, the Metropolitan church in Serres, the Archdiocese of Arkalochori and the historic church in Ermoúpolis, attended by local bishops, municipal officials and large numbers of faithful. In Romania, the holiday – known locally as “Probejenia” – was observed with traditional customs, restrictions on work, and a special fish‑allowance during the fasting period, while churches in Bucharest and other towns organized sermons and communal meals. Similar observances were reported from Italy, where the Transfiguration inspired cultural articles and devotional reflections, and from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, which highlighted the theological meaning of the event. Across the regions, the celebrations emphasized the biblical episode on Mount Tabor where Jesus’ face shone like the sun and his garments became white as light, reaffirming the divine nature of Christ for believers.
