Transgender identity rights and social recognition in Costa Rica and Mexico
In Costa Rica, the Citizens' Action Party (PAC) reaffirmed that being transgender is not a disease, marking the commemoration of the depathologization of trans identities. The organization called for combating discrimination, exclusion, and violence, emphasizing that all individuals deserve respect, dignity, and the right to live their identities freely.
In Mexico, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is implementing policies for the social recognition of gender identities. Following a 2022 university survey that identified over 5,000 members of the LGBT community, the institution developed mechanisms to ensure students and staff are addressed according to their self-identified gender. This initiative, supported by the Faculty of Medicine, aims to create safe, non-discriminatory educational environments through the institutional recognition of trans and non-binary identities.
