Dave & Buster's shares tumble following second-quarter earnings miss

Dave & Buster’s Entertainment reported a surprise second-quarter loss of $12.5 million, a significant downturn from the $11.4 million net income recorded during the same period last year. The company’s revenue fell 2.4% year-over-year to $544.1 million, missing Wall Street estimates.

This financial performance coincided with the company’s 14th consecutive quarter of declining same-store sales, which fell 2.9% in the most recent quarter. Adjusted EBITDA also saw a decline of approximately 24%, dropping to $98.9 million from $129.8 million in the previous year.

In response to these challenges, new CEO Darin Harper has announced a “back-to-basics” strategy. This plan involves simplifying the company’s marketing calendar, which leadership described as too complex for consumers to follow. The new approach will focus on an “evergreen value message,” emphasizing core offerings like Eat & Play Combos and specific promotional days, while also aligning marketing efforts with seasonal and cultural events.
