Transnistria economy faces structural crisis as GDP falls 19.4%

The economy of the Transnistria region is experiencing a structural crisis, characterized by a 19.4% contraction in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and a 20% decline in industrial production in 2025. Economic expert Veaceslav Ioniță indicates that the region's long-standing economic model—which relied on cheap natural gas, energy-intensive industry, and external financial support—is losing its viability.

The depletion of subsidized energy has exposed significant vulnerabilities, as the previous reliance on low-cost gas reduced the incentive for industrial modernization and energy efficiency. This shift has resulted in a widening economic gap between the Transnistrian region and the right bank of the Dniester. In 2025, the GDP per capita in Transnistria was estimated at approximately $4,000, compared to $8,500 on the right bank, with average salaries in Transnistria being roughly half of those on the right bank. Additionally, the actual population residing in the region is estimated to have fallen to 295,000 people.
