Transpetro to conduct emergency drills amid rising fuel theft

Transpetro, a major subsidiary of Petrobras, is conducting emergency response drills on August 12 in Rio de Janeiro (Japeri), São Paulo (São José dos Campos), and the Distrito Federal (Ceilândia). These exercises follow a rise in fuel theft and attempted thefts from the company’s pipeline network, which increased to 31 cases in 2025 from 25 in 2024.

The company operates 8,500 kilometers of pipelines for transporting oil and derivatives. The illegal interventions, known as clandestine derivation, pose significant risks, including explosions, fires, environmental damage, and disruptions to essential services like hospitals and airports.

Transpetro invests approximately R$ 100 million annually in technology and preventive measures to combat these crimes. In Ceilândia, the drill will take place on the São Paulo-Brasília Pipeline (Osbra), the largest in Brazil. This specific area was recently the site of a sophisticated theft attempt involving the construction of a tunnel to access the pipeline.
