Transport Canada bans drone flights within 9 km of wildfires

Transport Canada has issued a reminder that operating drones within a 9.3 km (5 nautical‑mile) radius of any wildfire is illegal and poses a serious safety risk. The restricted airspace is reserved for aircraft directly involved in wildfire suppression and authorised by fire‑control authorities.

Unauthorized drone flights can endanger firefighting aircraft, potentially forcing crews to suspend operations at critical moments. Violators may face administrative monetary penalties of up to $3,000 for individuals and $15,000 for corporations, with the possibility of imprisonment. Provincial and territorial authorities can also impose additional fines. The agency urges anyone who observes unsafe drone activity near a fire to contact emergency services (9‑1‑1).
