Denmark distributes 1 billion DKK to 22 pressured municipalities

The Danish Ministry of Economy and the Interior has announced the distribution of a 1 billion DKK special subsidy pool for 2027, aimed at supporting 22 municipalities facing severe economic and demographic challenges. The fund is part of a broader economic agreement between the government and Local Government Denmark (KL) to address the needs of rural and peripheral areas.

While the pool is historically large, many municipalities reported that the allocated funds fall short of their original requests. For example, Langeland Municipality received 68 million DKK despite requesting 115 million, and Hjørring Municipality received 45 million DKK after requesting 95 million. Local leaders expressed a mix of gratitude and frustration, noting that the subsidies do not fully cover rising costs or structural issues like aging populations and shrinking tax bases.

Significant recipients include Lolland with 223 million DKK, Morsø with 45 million DKK, and Bornholm with 110 million DKK. Additionally, 14 municipalities have been granted access to a 200 million DKK loan pool for capital investments. Economy and Interior Minister Pia Olsen Dyhr stated that while the pool does not solve all problems, it provides a necessary lifeline to ensure essential welfare services like schools and elderly care remain viable across the country.
