Transport for London launches VR initiative to combat hate crime
Transport for London (TfL) has launched a series of awareness initiatives to combat rising hate crime on its network during National Hate Crime Awareness Week, running from October 10 to 17, 2026. The organization is utilizing virtual reality demonstrations at eight Underground and Overground stations, including Euston, Stratford, and Finsbury Park, to provide passengers with a bystander’s perspective and teach safe intervention techniques.
Data indicates that 2,396 hate crime offences were recorded on the London transport network between January and August 2026, representing a 36 per cent increase compared to the same period the previous year. TfL attributed this rise to factors such as improved reporting of offences and international events.
In addition to the station demonstrations, TfL is partnering with the charity Protection Approaches to fund free online active bystander training sessions throughout autumn and winter. The agency is also running two major campaigns: one targeting perpetrators by highlighting the likelihood of conviction, and another, titled ‘Act Like a Friend’, which encourages passengers to adopt effective intervention techniques as a recognized social code.
