Latvia to Remove Road Sign Directions to Russia and Belarus

Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis told LETA that Latvia sees no need for road signs pointing to Russia or Belarus. The Ministry of Transport submitted an informational report in February, which was discussed with several ministries and the State Chancellery. The plan is to amend or replace the 235 directional signs that currently list Russian and Belarusian place names by 30 September 2026, prioritising signs in poor condition. New road projects already omit such names, and hundreds of existing signs in cities such as Riga, Daugavpils and Rēzekne are slated for removal. The estimated cost, including VAT, is about €120,000. Kozlovskis said the change may be reconsidered in the far future but is not required now.
