Bolivia: Unions and teachers announce protests over economic measures
Various social and labor sectors in Bolivia have announced a series of protests and strikes in response to recent economic policies. Transport unions have rejected a resolution by the ATT that applied a 35% increase only to maximum tariffs, failing to adjust minimum rates as previously negotiated. Drivers have warned that high fuel costs have left only 20% to 30% of diesel-powered transport operational.
In the education sector, the Confederation of Urban Education Workers of Bolivia (CTEUB) has called for a 24-hour national strike on Friday, October 23. The strike protests the government's proposal to decentralize education administration, which teachers argue could jeopardize the public and free nature of the system. Additionally, sectors aligned with former president Evo Morales have marched in Cochabamba to protest rising prices and the new diesel regime.
The government has responded by inviting urban teachers to dialogue and confirming work tables with rural teachers to discuss technical and regional curriculum issues, denying claims of impending privatization.
