Transportation Safety Board completes investigation into fatal 2022 float plane crash

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has concluded its investigation into a fatal 2022 float plane crash in Strachan Bay. The accident involved an Air Cab Cessna A185E seaplane that departed a logging camp for the Port Hardy Water Aerodrome.

Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft reached approximately 100 feet before pitching nose-down and colliding with the water. The crash resulted in the deaths of the pilot and two passengers, and the aircraft was destroyed.

Investigators identified several contributing factors, including adverse wind conditions and unsafe operational practices. A strong regional pressure gradient created low-level wind shear and mechanical turbulence. The TSB noted that limited familiarity with local wind conditions likely led to an incomplete pre-flight risk assessment. Additionally, the aircraft had undergone modifications that altered its short take-off and landing performance, which can leave pilots unaware of changes to aircraft handling.
