Transylvania wine industry highlights tourism and fermentation safety

In Transylvania, the wine industry offers diverse experiences ranging from historical oenotourism to seasonal safety concerns during the harvest. The Bethlen-Haller Castle in Alba County serves as a prominent landmark for wine tourism. Once a sparkling wine section for Jidvei during the communist era, the Renaissance-style castle has undergone extensive restoration to return to its original architecture. It currently offers high-end accommodations and guided tastings.

As the autumn harvest progresses, authorities such as ISU Botoșani are issuing safety warnings regarding the fermentation process. To prevent carbon dioxide poisoning—a colorless and odorless gas that can lead to loss of consciousness or death—citizens are advised not to ferment must in enclosed spaces, to ensure proper ventilation, and to check oxygen levels using a candle before entering fermentation rooms. Individuals with respiratory or cardiac issues are noted to be particularly susceptible to these risks.
