Transylvanian cat seeks international recognition as Romania's first native breed

The Transylvanian cat, a heritage breed originating from the Carpathian Mountains, is undergoing the process to become Romania's first officially recognized domestic cat breed. Characterized by a unique salt and pepper coat consisting of interspersed black and white hairs, the breed is noted for its medium size and gentle, non-aggressive temperament.

Experts describe the breed as highly healthy with a strong genetic background. The distinctive coloring is a natural genetic mutation rather than a result of selective breeding. While approximately 20 specimens are known to exist, the total population may be higher among owners unaware of the breed's purity.

Efforts to certify the breed have been underway for seven years. A request was submitted to The International Cat Association (TICA) to include the Transylvanian cat as a Transfer New Breed for Registration Only. Final official recognition is expected once the fourth generation of offspring is born, a process that could take up to two years.
