Transylvanian Hungarian political leaders face internal divisions

Political tensions are rising within the Hungarian minority community in Transylvania. Actor István Kátai, a founder of the first Transylvanian Tisza Sziget and an initiator of anti-Tusványos movements, has announced his withdrawal from active party politics. Kátai stated that he is stepping away from the creation of the Romanian Hungarian Unity Party due to threats, intimidation, and personal attacks that compromised the safety of his family. While exiting partisan politics, he intends to remain active in civil society to oppose corruption and political oppression.

Simultaneously, Tibor Toró, executive president of the Erdélyi Magyar Nemzeti Tanács (EMNT), has criticized the current direction of the Tusványos Summer University. Toró, a co-founder of the event, argued that the gathering has drifted from its original intellectual purpose and become overly politicized. He called for more open debate and criticized the foreign policy of the Hungarian government led by Viktor Orbán. These remarks have led to a public rift, with EMNT President László Tőkés issuing a statement distancing himself from Toró’s positions.
