Italy: Regional water crises, Naples taxi protests, and EU speech viewings

Several municipal and regional issues are unfolding across Italy. In the province of Trapani, nine municipalities, including Trapani itself, are organizing public viewings of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union speech. The initiative, promoted by Europe Direct Trapani Sicilia, aims to foster local participation and debate regarding European priorities.

In other regions, water management issues persist. In Trapani, a water contamination crisis has prompted a high-level response involving the Sicilian Region, Civil Protection, and the Italian Armed Forces to ensure the distribution of potable water via tankers. Meanwhile, in Guglionesi, local political groups are demanding accountability following a manganese contamination incident that has since been resolved. In Siracusa, recent electrical micro-interruptions caused pipe failures, leading to temporary water pressure drops in Ortigia and Borgata. Additionally, Acea Ato 2 has announced scheduled water service suspensions for maintenance in several Rome districts, including parts of Municipi VII, XI, and XII.

In Naples, tensions have risen between taxi organizations and the municipal administration. Following a meeting at the Prefecture intended to address traffic, smog, and fuel costs, taxi unions expressed frustration over the absence of key municipal officials, describing the lack of attendance as a setback for the category.
