Trapani politics: Forza Italia and M5S face local shifts

Political tensions are rising in the province of Trapani, Sicily, as local parties navigate shifting electoral landscapes ahead of the 2027 regional elections.

Within Forza Italia, Gaspare Lentini has called for a change in party management following significant losses in local elections. In Marsala, the party's representation in the municipal council dropped from three members to one. Lentini criticized the current leadership for prioritizing personal positions over new political energy, a sentiment echoed by regional group leader Stefano Pellegrino regarding management issues in Castelvetrano and Mazara del Vallo.

Simultaneously, the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) is preparing for a transition in Alcamo, where the party's decade-long local governance is concluding. Outgoing mayor Domenico Surdi, who is expected to run for regional office, and deputy Cristina Ciminnisi are emerging as key figures for the movement. While M5S has maintained strength in Alcamo, the party has struggled to secure council seats in other provincial municipalities like Marsala, Castelvetrano, and Erice.
