Trapani prison inspector injured by boiling oil attack

A prison police inspector was injured after being struck by boiling oil thrown from above at the Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani, Sicily. The attack occurred in the Mediterraneo ward while the officer was assisting in the transfer of a detainee to isolation.

The officer was treated at the Sant’Antonio Abate hospital and received a 15-day medical prognosis. Prison unions, including Consipe and SAPPE, have condemned the incident, with Consipe president Mimmo Nicotra describing it as a premeditated attempted murder and part of a broader “war” against prison staff.

Unions are demanding immediate government intervention, including the transfer of the responsible detainee out of the region, the implementation of special security regimes, and the installation of anti-launch barriers. They have also called for a mass evacuation of Sicilian prison facilities, citing recent unrest in Siracusa and Palermo. Consipe warned that if the Ministry of Justice and regional authorities do not provide tangible responses, the union will declare a state of national agitation.
