Trapani prison thwarts drug and phone smuggling attempt

Prison police at the Pietro Cerulli correctional facility in Trapani intercepted two men trying to launch packages over the wall that were suspected of containing mobile phones and narcotics. An officer on duty spotted the attempt, alerted the command and two patrol units were dispatched. The suspects fled toward nearby houses, were pursued, identified at the prison headquarters and then released pending judicial proceedings.

The operation drew praise from local officials and labour representatives. Maurizio Miceli, provincial president of Fratelli d’Italia in Trapani, commended the police for their professionalism and called for continued investment in the force. Gioacchino Veneziano, regional head of the UIL FP Polizia Penitenziaria in Sicily, highlighted the success despite chronic staffing shortages and thanked the officers for preventing illicit material from entering the prison.

Both the political and union statements emphasized the importance of vigilance in maintaining institutional security and protecting public safety.
