Trapani State Archive completes renovation of Sant'Anna convent

The State Archive of Trapani has completed a major renovation of the former Sant'Anna convent, following nearly four years of work. The project, titled ‘Beyond the Archive: Culture in Value,’ was funded by a 1.7 million euro investment through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Executed by the Sicilian Archival Superintendency, the renovation focused on improving accessibility and creating new spaces for study and consultation. Key improvements include the creation of a new study room in a previously unused area, the installation of elevators and vertical connections to reach various levels and terraces, and the removal of architectural barriers.

The project also involved structural reinforcements, such as securing roofs and consolidating masonry and vaults. To integrate contemporary needs with the historic structure, marble flooring from nearby Custonaci quarries was used. Officials noted that the intervention serves to strengthen the archive's role as a cultural and civic center for the territory while meeting European objectives for inclusivity in cultural heritage sites.
