Trapani faces water contamination and waste service labor disputes
Trapani is currently facing two distinct local crises: a microbiological water contamination emergency and a labor dispute regarding waste management services.
Regarding the water crisis, Sicilian President Renato Schifani convened an urgent technical meeting to address the contamination affecting approximately 154 users in the northwest area of the city. Local authorities, including Mayor Giacomo Tranchida and Prefect Daniela Lupo, are coordinating with the ASP, Civil Protection, and Siciliacque to manage the emergency. Through extraordinary maintenance and continuous monitoring, the municipal administration anticipates the crisis could be resolved within 15 days, provided subsequent analyses confirm the effectiveness of current interventions. To support affected residents, a dedicated call center for water tanker services is being activated.
Simultaneously, the city is facing an employment emergency involving the company Formula Ambiente. The company has announced intentions to initiate collective redundancy procedures that could impact 15 workers due to a reduction in municipal services. This follows the City Council's failure to approve the 2026 Tari tariff and the related PEF. While the Mayor has expressed a commitment to finding the necessary budget resources to maintain service levels and protect jobs, labor unions, including Cgil and Fit Cisl, have declared states of agitation and threatened strikes to prevent the layoffs.
