Trastevere tree collapse causes panic in Rome

A ten-meter-tall tree collapsed in Rome’s Trastevere district on Thursday, September 3, in Piazza Sant’Egidio. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM near outdoor restaurant seating, including the Tonnarello restaurant, during the lunch hour.

While the fall caused panic among pedestrians and diners, no injuries or material damages were reported. Local police and firefighters responded to secure the area and remove the debris. Initial inspections revealed the tree was internally compromised, with significant damage caused by larvae and trunk deterioration.

The incident has drawn criticism from the association CURAA, which has called for the resignation of Environment Councilor Sabrina Alfonsi, citing failures in the management of urban greenery.
