Travel advice for driving abroad: Permit scams and insurance

Travelers planning to drive abroad should be cautious of fraudulent websites offering international driving permits. While official permits are typically obtained through local driving license authorities, many illegitimate sites promise rapid PDF issuance for fees ranging from 50 to 150 euros. In contrast, the ADAC notes that a legitimate international driving permit costs approximately 15 euros. Using these fake services poses significant risks, including the potential theft and unprotected storage of sensitive personal data.

Regarding vehicle coverage, motor third-party liability insurance is mandatory and generally valid throughout Europe and EU territories. However, drivers should verify specific coverage for rental cars, breakdowns, and medical emergencies. While partial and comprehensive insurance (Kasko) usually covers damage to one's own vehicle in Europe, certain regions like the Asian part of Turkey may require explicit verification with insurers. Additionally, specific regional nuances, such as whether reindeer accidents are covered in Scandinavia, should be reviewed before departure.
