Travel advice: Managing payment fees and health insurance abroad
Travelers are advised to prepare for potential financial and medical complications when journeying abroad. Regarding payments, the ÖAMTC warns that while card usage is seamless within the Eurozone, transactions outside the Eurozone may incur foreign currency fees or minimum charges depending on the bank and card provider.
To avoid unnecessary costs, travelers should compare debit and credit card conditions before departure, check payment limits, and ensure Geo-Control functions are appropriately configured. When paying abroad, it is recommended to choose the local currency rather than accepting immediate conversions into Euros, which often involve unfavorable exchange rates. Carrying some cash remains useful for tips or small businesses in non-tourist areas.
In terms of healthcare, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provides access to medically necessary services in EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK. However, the EHIC does not replace comprehensive travel health insurance. Coverage is subject to the host country's specific rules and may not cover private clinics or costs for medical repatriation. Travelers may also be required to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later.
