eSIM technology disrupts traditional mobile roaming markets
The rise of eSIM technology is disrupting the traditional mobile roaming market by providing travelers with a more affordable and convenient alternative to physical SIM cards and high international roaming fees.
NewSky eSIM offers international mobile internet connectivity in over 200 destinations, allowing users to install data plans directly onto their smartphones before arrival. The service includes an affiliate program for travel agencies and influencers and leverages 25 years of telecommunications experience in Japan.
Other providers, such as Yesim, offer coverage in more than 170 countries. Because eSIMs are embedded in a device's hardware, they can be programmed remotely, enabling travelers to maintain their domestic number for calls while using the eSIM for data. This shift toward digital, pre-activated data plans poses a potential threat to the multi-billion dollar roaming revenues of traditional mobile operators.
