Travel eSIM technology transforms global mobile roaming markets
The rapid expansion of eSIM technology is transforming the international mobile connectivity market. As travelers increasingly purchase and install digital data connectivity before reaching their destinations, the traditional reliance on physical SIM cards and standard operator roaming packages is shifting.
GSMA data indicates that global eSIM smartphone penetration is expected to reach approximately 10% by the end of 2026, with eSIM connections projected to outnumber traditional SIM cards by 2030. While travel eSIMs pose a challenge to traditional retail roaming revenue—with Juniper Research estimating potential displacement of $1.2 billion in 2025—they also present wholesale opportunities. Kaleido Intelligence forecasts that travel eSIM traffic could contribute nearly $10 billion in attributable wholesale roaming revenue to operators by 2030.
However, operators face risks if technical standards like GSMA’s IR.21 are not properly implemented. Inconsistent or outdated information used to configure roaming between networks can lead to lost wholesale opportunities, making technical infrastructure critical to maintaining revenue in this evolving landscape.
