Travel experts identify top destinations and alternatives for 2027

Travel publications have released recommendations for top destinations in 2027, focusing on both highly rated regions and lesser-known alternatives to combat overtourism.

Lonely Planet has named two Australian regions as top destinations for 2027: The Red Centre and the Tweed region. The Red Centre features Alice Springs and natural formations such as Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Watarrka. The region offers cultural tours led by the Anangu people and is noted for its desert climate.

Intrepid Travel released its 2027 ‘Not Hot List,’ highlighting ten destinations intended to provide alternatives to popular tourist hubs. The list includes Samburu National Reserve in Kenya, Mestia in Georgia, the Pekoe Trail in Sri Lanka, Whitehorse in Canada, and the Carretera Austral in Chile. These locations were selected based on their tourism readiness, lower visitor numbers compared to similar sites, and new infrastructure or connectivity developments.
