Travel experts warn of legal risks when importing souvenirs

Experts from ARAG have issued guidance regarding the legalities of importing souvenirs during travel. While travelers within the European Union can generally bring items home for personal use without customs formalities, certain restrictions apply to specific categories of goods.

Items classified as cultural heritage, such as antique coins, archaeological finds, or old ceramics, are subject to strict national regulations. Travelers are advised to consult cultural or customs authorities before purchasing such items. Additionally, certain medications and protected natural products may face import restrictions.

Natural items like shells, stones, or sand are also subject to varying laws. While collecting small amounts is generally permitted in Germany outside of nature reserves, other countries enforce much stricter rules. For instance, in Italy, removing sand or stones from beaches can result in fines of up to 3,000 euros.
