Travel guidelines for carry-on liquids and essential items
Travelers must navigate varying security regulations regarding liquids, aerosols, gels, and pastes in carry-on luggage. At many European airports, the standard rule requires containers to be no larger than 100 milliliters, with all items fitting into a single one-liter transparent, resealable plastic bag. It is important to note that security checks are based on the capacity printed on the container rather than the actual volume of liquid remaining inside.
Regulations are becoming more localized due to the implementation of new CT scanners. For example, starting June 26, 2026, passengers departing from Zurich Airport will benefit from expanded rules allowing liquid containers of up to two liters in carry-on luggage. However, these relaxations do not automatically apply to transfer points or other departure airports, so travelers are advised to pack cosmetics according to the strictest requirement of their entire route.
To improve comfort during long-haul flights, experts suggest carrying specific essentials such as large scarves for warmth or as pillows, thick socks to prevent cold feet, and slippers for ease of movement within the cabin.
