Travel industry faces profit squeeze despite rising revenues
The travel industry is experiencing a phenomenon described by Travel Trends Advisory as ‘The Great Repricing,’ where rising headline revenues are masking significant pressure on profit margins. While booking volumes or prices may increase, rising operational costs are preventing this growth from reaching the bottom line.
Major companies have reported this trend. TUI saw its third-quarter underlying operating earnings fall by approximately 27% despite improved booking activity, and Tripadvisor reported a 7% revenue decline alongside a 21% drop in adjusted earnings. Similarly, Australia’s Flight Centre saw leisure sales grow by 7.4% to a record level, yet leisure profit fell by 21.7% due to factors such as refunds.
In the corporate sector, businesses are facing challenges with travel budget overruns. These variances are often driven by a combination of market-driven price increases, such as volatile airfares and hotel rates, and internal issues like late bookings, policy non-compliance, and fragmented purchasing. Experts suggest that finance and procurement leaders must distinguish between increased trip volume and rising costs to manage travel spend effectively.
