Travel industry shifts toward micro-travel and experiential luxury
The travel industry is undergoing a shift in consumer preferences, according to recent reports from Hilton and the Michelin Guide. Hilton’s 2027 Trends Report, based on a survey of nearly 15,000 travelers, identifies “the micro-travel mindset” as a major upcoming trend. This involves shorter, more frequent trips that are easier to integrate into daily work schedules or allow for greater spontaneity.
Travelers are categorized into “selectors,” who plan trips around specific events like concerts or sports, and “stackers,” who aim to visit multiple cities in a single journey. Additionally, the report notes a rise in “the rise of ‘ish’,” where travelers embrace less-than-perfect experiences, such as being “healthy-ish” or “adventure-ish.”
Simultaneously, the definition of luxury travel is evolving. Marie-France Perrel of the Michelin Guide noted that luxury is moving away from traditional opulence and marble toward a “sense of place” and a fusion of food, wellness, and service. Food has become a central component of the travel experience, with an increase in “intentional travel around food,” where travelers book destinations specifically to experience certain cuisines or authentic local dishes.
