Travel insurance advice for medical emergencies abroad

Medical emergencies during travel can result in significant financial burdens. According to the consumer portal Finanztip, costs for specific incidents can vary widely: a heart attack in Spain including repatriation to Germany can cost up to 60,000 euros, a broken forearm while hiking in Austria can cost up to 2,500 euros, and gastrointestinal illnesses in Egypt can reach 4,000 euros.

German statutory health insurance (GKV) often only covers a portion of treatment costs abroad, as many foreign doctors bill privately or require high co-payments. Additionally, the GKV does not cover medical repatriation to Germany.

Private travel health insurance is recommended to bridge these gaps. Experts note that high-quality coverage can be affordable; Stiftung Warentest reports that ‘very good’ protection for individuals can start at approximately eight euros annually, while families may pay around 30 euros. Finanztip suggests specific tariffs such as Huk24’s RIE20, as well as options from Debeka and Concordia.
