Travel management role shifts from operational booking to strategic leadership

The role of the travel manager is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting from operational tasks like booking trips and negotiating hotel rates toward strategic corporate decision-making. According to a study by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), seven out of ten surveyed travel buyers and managers report that the travel management function is gaining importance during periods of market uncertainty and disruption.

Modern travel managers are increasingly integrated into corporate leadership, risk management, and high-level organizational decisions. Their responsibilities now include coordinating diverse internal interests, assessing external market developments, managing service providers, and ensuring travel programs function smoothly under changing conditions.

Andreas Neumann, Managing Director of ADAC Reisevertrieb and member of the 'Chefsache Business Travel' initiative, notes that the role has moved away from organizing individual trips toward managing complex systems and mediating various corporate requirements. This evolution requires new competencies in data analysis, risk governance, and the ability to communicate effectively with executive leadership, including CEOs and CFOs.
