Travel safety tips to prevent theft during transit and vacations

Travelers are advised to take specific precautions to avoid theft while using public transportation and during vacations.

To prevent pickpocketing on trains, experts recommend keeping valuables like smartphones, wallets, and passports on one's person rather than in unattended bags or on adjacent seats. When leaving a seat, such as to use the restroom, important items should be taken along. The German Federal Police (Bundespolizei) warns that thieves often work in teams, using distraction techniques where one person offers unsolicited help with luggage to facilitate the theft of valuables by an accomplice.

For beach and pool safety, unconventional methods are suggested to deter thieves. One social media hack involves hiding valuables inside a disposable diaper to make them appear unappealing to potential thieves. Adding water to the diaper can make it look and feel heavy, increasing the effectiveness of the camouflage, provided the items are properly protected from moisture.
