Travel scams rise during summer peak involving deceptive tours and fake websites

As the summer travel season begins, reports highlight various risks and scams targeting tourists, ranging from fraudulent websites to deceptive tour packages.

In Yunnan, China, an investigation by CCTV exposed the dark side of “low-price pure play tours.” Advertised as budget-friendly trips with no mandatory shopping, these tours were found to be sold through multiple layers of subcontractors. Travelers reported being pressured by guides to purchase jade, with some facing threats of having their accommodations or sightseeing activities canceled if they refused to shop. The Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism has launched an investigation into the involved travel agencies and guides, promising zero tolerance for such illegal practices.

Simultaneously, warnings have been issued regarding fake hotel and flight booking websites. Scammers often use sophisticated phishing techniques and high-quality imitations of official platforms to steal personal and payment information. To combat this, experts suggest that businesses use verified regional top-level domains, such as “.hk,” which require valid business registration to help establish online credibility and protect consumers from fraudulent sites.
