Travel trends and rising aviation costs shape future industry outlook
The travel industry is facing a combination of shifting consumer behaviors and rising operational costs. A Skyscanner report on 2027 travel trends indicates that demand remains strong, with approximately 87% of Dutch travelers planning to travel as much as or more than they do currently. Key trends include a desire for digital disconnection, interest in regional and exclusive physical souvenirs, and a rise in inclusive group celebrations known as ‘Sten Do’.
Simultaneously, aviation costs are projected to rise due to new environmental regulations and fuel requirements. The European Commission has proposed expanding the Emissions Trading System (ETS) to include flights departing Europe for destinations up to 5,000 kilometers away, such as Istanbul and North Africa. This move, slated for 2029, faces opposition from IATA, which argues it will disadvantage European carriers compared to those in the Gulf and Turkey.
Further cost pressures stem from the mandate for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which is significantly more expensive than traditional kerosene, and volatile global oil prices. Environmental groups estimate these regulatory changes could increase ticket prices to destinations like Istanbul by approximately 30 euros.
