Traveler safety and financial risks at major global landmarks

Travelers face two primary risks during international trips: financial hidden costs and physical theft.

Regarding financial transactions, using the euro option on Point of Sale (POS) terminals abroad can trigger Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). This service allows merchants or ATMs to convert transactions into the cardholder's home currency immediately, but often at unfavorable exchange rates and with added markups. To avoid these costs, travelers are advised to select the local currency, allowing their own bank to handle the conversion according to their card's specific terms.

In terms of physical security, an analysis by Truffa.net identifies the Eiffel Tower in Paris as the world's highest-risk attraction, recording 23,757 reports of scams, thefts, and pickpocketing per million visitors. The Colosseum in Rome is the highest-ranked Italian site, with 10,300 reports per million visitors. Common issues at these major landmarks include pickpocketing, theft of personal belongings, and various scams such as false petitions or aggressive street vendors.
