Air travelers can curb costly delays and cancellations with practical tips

Airline delays and cancellations are increasingly common during peak travel periods, adding unexpected expenses for passengers. In Colombia, more than 13.8 million passengers were recorded in the first quarter of 2025, a 3.5 % rise from the previous year, underscoring growing air traffic. Luz Doris Bustamante, Country Manager of Universal Assistance, notes that unplanned delays can cost travelers between 250,000 and 800,000 Colombian pesos domestically, and over one million pesos on international trips.

Travel experts advise several preventative measures: contact the airline by phone as soon as a cancellation is announced to avoid long queues at the gate; complete online check‑in early to secure better seating and reduce airport time; organise cabin luggage efficiently to speed security screening; and stay aware of weather or operational alerts that may affect flights. Following these steps can minimise extra hotel nights, re‑booked connections, and lost tourist activities, helping passengers keep their travel budgets on target.
