Travelers' Health Coverage Options Across Europe and Beyond
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows visitors to receive urgent and necessary medical care in all EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It covers emergencies, chronic conditions, pregnancy and childbirth, but does not replace travel insurance and does not pay for private or planned treatments. The card is free, can be applied for through a national health insurer and is reimbursed either on the spot or after returning home.
For trips outside the EHIC network, experts advise obtaining travel insurance that covers emergency medical treatment, hospital stays, medication and possible medical evacuation. Travelers should research local emergency numbers, keep insurer contact details handy and understand policy exclusions before departure. Prompt reporting of incidents to insurers helps manage costs and ensures access to appropriate care.
