Travelers Shift from Île de Ré to Cotentin as Prices Soar

Premium holidaymakers are increasingly avoiding the Atlantic‑coast Île de Ré after summer overcrowding and rising accommodation costs drove prices up by roughly 40 %. The Cotentin peninsula in Normandy has emerged as a cheaper alternative, offering comparable upscale lodging at about €145 per night versus €280 on the island, along with quieter beaches, historic manor houses and spa services.

Amid this tourism shift, French writer Valérie Solvit published a lyrical homage to Île de Ré, recalling the island’s scenic ports, historic sites and personal memories, and celebrating its enduring charm despite the growing commercial pressures.
