Travel QR Code Scam Targets Tourists Worldwide

A growing travel fraud known as “Quishing” uses counterfeit QR‑code stickers and fake payment pages to steal personal and financial information from tourists. Scammers place these bogus codes over legitimate ones at restaurant tables, café menus, parking meters, toll booths, rental‑car kiosks, airport signs, train stations and hotel notices. When a traveler scans the code, they are redirected to a fraudulent website that mimics official payment or check‑in pages and may request credit‑card details.

The warning advises a four‑step habit: pause before scanning, inspect the physical code for tampering, verify the URL before entering any data, and, if suspicious, close the page and report the incident to the relevant authority. Travelers who have already entered information should contact their bank and monitor accounts for unauthorized charges. The advice does not call for abandoning QR codes altogether, but stresses vigilance to avoid becoming a victim of the scam.
