Travelodge CEO resigns following hotel security failures
Jo Boydell has stepped down as CEO of Travelodge Hotels Ltd. after four years in the role. The departure follows intense scrutiny regarding the company’s security protocols after a female guest was sexually assaulted at the chain’s Maidenhead location in December 2022.
The incident involved an unauthorized man obtaining a room keycard by misrepresenting himself to staff. Following the assault, the company faced criticism for its response, including an inappropriate £30 refund offer to the victim. Boydell also faced political pressure, including criticism from Keir Starmer, after she cancelled meetings with members of parliament to discuss the incident.
Travelodge has launched an independent review led by barrister Paul Greaney KC alongside internal investigations. The company has pledged to strengthen safety measures and is currently rolling out revised security protocols. Chief Financial Officer Ray Reidy will serve as interim CEO while the company searches for a permanent successor.
