Travis Gienger wins California pumpkin weigh-off as Rhode Island grower nears world record
Giant pumpkin growers are competing for heavyweight titles and potential world records during a season of major weigh-offs.
In Half Moon Bay, California, Travis Gienger of Minnesota won the 53rd annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. His pumpkin, named ‘Rocky’, weighed 2,389 pounds, marking his fifth championship win at the event. Gienger transported the massive gourd over 2,000 miles from Minnesota to participate.
Meanwhile, in New England, grower Ron Wallace of Greene, Rhode Island, appears to have set a new world record. His pumpkin weighed 3,156 pounds, which would surpass the previous record of 2,857 pounds set by Ian Paton of Lymington, England, on October 3. Wallace is currently awaiting official verification from Guinness World Records.
