Travis Hunter shifts toward primary cornerback role with Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars appear to be shifting Travis Hunter toward a primary role as a cornerback. While Hunter has expressed a desire to play both offense and defense, recent practice reports indicate he is playing defense almost exclusively. During a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers, Hunter recorded 28 defensive snaps compared to only two offensive snaps.

Jaguars coach Liam Coen has indicated that the coaching staff prefers Hunter to focus on defensive mental reps rather than switching to the offensive side of the ball. This shift aligns with analyst Myron Medcalf’s view that committing Hunter to defense full-time could be the key to a playoff run, citing his ability to act as a superior playmaker and game-changer on that side of the ball.

Under defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, the Jaguars' defense saw a significant increase in takeaways last season. Hunter, who added muscle during the offseason, is expected to play closer to the line of scrimmage. Although he may still see some snaps at wide receiver, the team's current trajectory suggests a heavy emphasis on his defensive contributions.
