Traxport partners with Climate Focus for Lagos–Kano rail project

Traxport Rail Services Ltd has engaged climate consultancy Climate Focus to develop and strengthen the carbon programme for its proposed Lagos–Kano Low-Carbon Freight Corridor. The initiative aims to align the project with international carbon standards, specifically Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), to attract climate finance.

The project involves rehabilitating and utilizing approximately 1,500 kilometers of Nigeria’s existing narrow-gauge rail corridor. This will create a dedicated freight link between the port gateway of Lagos and the industrial hub of Kano. Developed in partnership with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, the corridor is intended to decarbonize freight, reduce highway pressure, and ease port congestion.

Climate Focus will revise the project’s Project Design Document (PDD) and apply the AM0090 methodology to establish monitoring frameworks and emissions-reduction calculations. Traxport Chairman Chukwuemeka Ndu stated that the carbon component will be built on “rigorous methodology, transparent assumptions and credible measurement from the outset.”
