Brazil 2026 Elections: TSE processes 21,000 candidacies

As Brazil approaches the 2026 elections, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has processed nearly 99% of the 20,985 candidacy requests. To date, 18,861 registrations have been approved, while approximately 1,502 candidacies have been rejected. The primary reasons for rejection include failure to meet formal legal requirements, lack of eligibility conditions, and issues with party conventions. The Democrata and DC parties have seen the highest number of rejected registrations.

A notable development is the unanimous rejection of Pablo Marçal's presidential candidacy by the TSE due to party affiliation issues and ineligibility. The court has prohibited Marçal from campaigning and ordered his name to be removed from electronic voting machines.

In preparation for the vote on October 4, the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) has begun preparing 42,000 electronic voting machines. This process includes data recording, system loading, and testing, with up to 6% of machines subject to audit. Additionally, the TRE-RJ is distributing 1.4 million voting slips to help voters navigate the six different positions on the ballot and reduce wait times.

Legal protections are also in effect; candidates are protected from arrest 15 days before the first round, a rule that extends until 48 hours after the election concludes.
