Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Launches Child Savings Accounts and Mulls Yen Purchases
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the newly created "Trump Accounts" program has enrolled 7 million children, with 86 % from families earning less than $200,000. The tax‑advantaged accounts are available to all U.S. citizens under 18, and children born between 2025 and 2028 will receive a $1,000 seed investment from the Treasury.
In a separate development, a photograph taken at a Camp David cabinet meeting showed Bessent’s handwritten to‑do list that included a proposal to purchase $5‑10 billion of Japanese yen. The note suggests the Treasury is considering market intervention to support the yen, which had recently strengthened against the dollar. The United States has not intervened in the yen market since a coordinated G7 action in 2011.
