Treasury Wine Estates prioritizes luxury brands over fire sales
Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) has announced a strategic shift to prioritize high-margin luxury brands over mid-tier commercial labels. Following a $50 million sale of Rosemount, Ingoldby, and Secret Stone to AG Oatley Wines, Chairman John Mullen ruled out further “fire sales,” stating the company will not sell brands at undervalued prices just to offload them.
Chief Executive Sam Fischer aims to streamline the company’s portfolio from approximately 75 brands down to 35. This restructuring, part of the Ascent transformation program, includes a goal to achieve $100 million in annual cost savings by fiscal 2029 and involves cutting roughly 170 roles. The strategy responds to shifting retail trends in Asia, where distributors are increasingly prioritizing high-margin status bottles over volume-driven table wines.
Despite market pressures, TWE reported a positive start to the fiscal year. The luxury Penfolds division has seen growth, with depletions in China performing slightly ahead of plan due to improved market conditions and a shift toward authorized distribution channels. Penfolds also showed strong depletion growth in the United States.
